Superstar

Once upon a time…when I used to have time to play games, I was an avid “Simmer”. For those who might not know what I’m talking about, I’m referring to The Sims, the computer “life simulation” game from EA. I played the original Sims way back when, moved on to the Sims 2 and loved it, found myself disappointed with Sims 3, and gradually fell away from the game and the “simming” community. I’ve now learned that Sims 4 is coming up, so maybe I’ll have to make a little time and check the new version out when it arrives.

But, back to the DAILY PROMPT. Even  after I stopped actually “playing” the game, I remained an active member of the Sims community. I began creating my own “Sims” and sharing them through the Community Exchange.

I’m also a history lover, so one of the Sims I created and shared was Jackie Kennedy.

Jackie Kennedy created for Sims 3

Another “simmer” downloaded Jackie, put her in a girl band, and uploaded the video to YouTube. It was hilarious. This all took place about four years ago, and even though I still have the video link, I haven’t been able to get it to work, so I’m not sure if the YouTube video is still there. I’m including it here…maybe someone can try it. If it works, please let me know. I’m guessing it’s probably too old.

The real Jackie Kennedy was definitely a “super star”, and in her own way, my Sims 3 version became a star, too.

Any other “Simmers” out there?

Boomer!

When I saw “I Want to Thank My Cats” as the title for today’s DAILY PROMPT, I was really excited. I have some great cat photos to share. But, then I read on, and saw that for photographers, the prompt was “VICTORY”. I knew at once what picture I’d share today…but golly gee, I wish it had been the cats!

Anyway, here’s “Boomer”.

MVP of the "Lady Tigers"

MVP of the “Lady Tigers”

She’s one of our daughters, and despite being only 5’4″ tall, she was a very good basketball player. She began playing when she was about 9 or thereabouts, played AAU ball for many years, played also in a city-sponsored league, went on to become MVP of her high-school team in her senior year, then attended college on a full-ride basketball scholarship.  (Hey, as her Mom, I’m allowed to brag.)  During her college career, she played in 3 national NAIA tournaments, twice as a player, and once as a player/coach. The first year, the team went to the “Sweet 16”, the following year they made the “Elite 8”, and in her last year, yes, they got to the “Final 4”.

Now, that was exciting!

Today, “Boomer” is a para-professional for an elementary school, working with special needs children. She doesn’t spend much time on the court now, but as a result of her years in sports, she’s demonstrated again and again what it means to be a true “team player”. We’re proud of her, both for her illustrious “career” in basketball and for the outstanding young woman she’s become.

She Thinks She’s Very Clever

DAILY PROMPT: CLEVER

Meet Anna. Her full name is Anna Banana, and she’s an eleven-year-old Double-Yellow-Headed Amazon Parrot. No, she doesn’t have two heads. The “double-yellow-headed” part refers to the amount of yellow, not the number of heads. 🙂

Anna Clever

Although this definitely is not one of her best shots, it will have to do today. She actually doesn’t like having her picture taken, and she’s even worse when it comes to recording. I do have one hilarious 5 minute recording of her “singing” opera — no words, just la-la-la-la sounds. Surprisingly, she actually managed to end on the right pitch. But if she sees me with my “smart phone” she shuts up and usually starts climbing all over her cage.

Anna does think she’s quite clever. One evening she decided to hide when it was time to go back inside her cage. Oh, she thought she was so smart to perch on the bottom rung of one of the chairs at the dining table. She was well-concealed beneath the long tablecloth…or so she thought. She forgot about her tail feathers sticking out.

As you can see, her favorite treat in all the world is a ginger cookie. Not just any ginger cookie. She adores “Anna’s Ginger Cookies” made by the Biscotti Company. The company even gave her a complimentary cookie tin all her own.

Anna's Cookie Tin

So, Miss Anna is probably the only parrot who has a cookie tin with her name on it…hmmm…maybe she IS a bit clever, at that!

Listen and Learn

Getting a late start today…but I’m glad I have a chance to share this picture. Few things in life are as important as education, in my opinion. Learning should be fun. Too often it’s presented as a dull and dreadful chore.

Good teachers know how to draw children in to the joy of learning. I got this shot of a group of children eagerly listening to their teacher.

The Liebster Award

To say that I’m excited would be an understatement. I’m thrilled to receive my first blogging award: The Liebster.  I was nominated by “The Honorable Keithy” from down under in Australia, and yes, Keithy, we spell “honorable” differently up here in this hemisphere.

The Honorable Keithy

Keithy, you have truly honored me by visiting my blog, walking alongside me as I stroll through nature, capturing moments of beauty.

When nominating me, she explained that the Liebster — German for “favorite” — is an award given to small blogs, those with less than 200 followers. It’s designed to encourage interaction and to promote discovery of new blogs.

One of the first things I’ve learned since I began blogging here recently is that there’s a wonderful, supportive community of bloggers, and I’m grateful to be a part of it.

To accept my Liebster Award, I must do several things:

  1. Link back and recognize the blogger who nominated me.
  2. Answer ten questions given to me by Keithy.
  3. Nominate ten other bloggers for the award.
  4. Create ten questions for my nominees to answer.
  5. Notify my nominees.

So… to begin. As shown above, my nominator is Keithy, whose real name is “J”, and she’s blogging at The Common Map. Please visit her blog and see what she’s up to now.

She’s given me ten questions.

1) If you were a superhero, what type would you be?

Whatever I’d be, I would have the power of invisibility.  I think I’d probably be more “supernatural” than “super”…maybe a fairy who skipped through the meadow bringing love to the lonely and peace to the world.

2) What do you do in your downtime? Apart from blogging?

I read. I write. I cook. I walk. I take photographs. I do artwork. Mostly, I learn. I’m always studying something. Lately I’ve been brushing up on my Russian.

3) What would you tell your 10-year-old self?

Don’t ever lose sight of your dreams. Work to make them real. Find out what you need to know, and get busy learning it. Above all, do things. Take chances. Fall down. Get up.

4) What’s the one thing you find difficult about blogging? What motivates you to keep going despite that?

I’m a perfectionist, and I like order. I have problems composing posts at times because even the “visual” editor doesn’t always accurately show how my finished post will appear. Plus, no matter how carefully I proofread, errors slip by me. I’m always editing and re-editing my posts, trying to correct every boo-boo.  Of course, I keep going because I love learning, and I love sharing what I’ve learned with others.

5) What is your pet peeve?

Which one? I have several.  I suppose what irks me most are people who are always late.  If we have an appointment for lunch at 11:30, I expect you to be there at 11:30 or thereabouts, not 12:15 or later.  Of course, it’s not really all that much of a problem. If you’re late once, fine. Twice? You’d better have a good reason. Three times? That’s our last luncheon appointment. I have better things to do than stand around waiting for habitually late people. If our lunch together isn’t important enough for you to show up on time, then I probably don’t want to have lunch with you anyway.

6) What’s the one thing you are missing in your life?

My little sister. She passed away several years ago.  I wish so often she could be here to share things in my life. I miss talking to her. I miss hearing her laugh. I miss her offbeat outlook on life.

7) What’s your worst habit?

Getting sidetracked. I’ll start off with good intentions of doing one thing, but I’ll veer off-course onto something else, and from there, I’ll head off on another tangent, and what was the question again?

8) If you were a color, what would you be and why?

I’d be blue. Not bright, but light and pastel. It’s a restful, soothing color, the color of lakes and rivers, the color of the sky. It’s also a symbol of peace.

9) What is one thing you can do better than anyone else in the world?

Being me.

10) What would be the soundtrack to your life?

I’ve actually chosen several. I’m very fond of Connie Elisor’s Blackberry Winter, or anything by Maurice Ravel.  Well, anything except Bolero.  I love music, so it’s impossible for me to name only one composition to cover my life.

****

Next, I’ll nominate ten other bloggers. My choices are:

Flowers and Breezes

Often Me

Okay, What If?

Saving Daddy’s Soulmate

Not a Punk Rocker

Mostly True Ramblings

One Mind One Breath

My Mostly Unfabulous Life

Complete Health Circle

Reflections

Here are the ten questions I’ll be giving them:

  1. What book has most influenced you in your life?
  2. If you could change one thing in your life, what would it be?
  3. What is your favorite holiday and why?
  4. Where would you most like to travel?
  5. Does your car have a name? If so, what is it?
  6. Favorite pet?
  7. What five words would your friends use to describe you?
  8. What’s your favorite childhood memory?
  9. What was the last show you watched on television?
  10. Do you believe in ghosts?

I’m thrilled to receive a Liebster!

Thanks so much for thinking of me, Honorable Keithy. I’m off now to deliver glad tidings to ten bloggers.

Time Keeps On Slipping…Into the Future

When the DAILY PROMPT flashed up in my inbox a moment ago, I eagerly opened it, then stared blankly at the words. Time? We’re supposed to show TIME? I looked at the clock, thought of photographing it, but then the words of a song came into my head:

“Time keeps on slipping, slipping…into the future. “

Fly Like an Eagle – Steve Miller Band

With those words, and thoughts of how quickly time passes, I turned at once to the family collage I made.Grotjan and Zungs Family Collage

I’m the little one in the picture on the right…the cute one. 🙂

Oh, What Tangled Webs We Weave

Haphazard. I know what it means, but I looked it up all the same because I wanted to begin from a point of authority.

Haphazard: Lacking any obvious principle of organization.

Sounds a lot like my life…especially my writing room.  Oh, well. As they say, creativity is making a mess, then cleaning it up. I just haven’t gotten around to the cleaning up part yet.

Hapazard has lots of interesting synonyms:

  • Random
  • Chance
  • Accidental
  • Incidental
  • Fortuitous

I’m especially fond of that last one.  Fortuitous. Meaning that something good can come from random, unexpected, accidental happenings in our lives.

That’s how I approach my artwork. I take photographs. I play around. I twist things and turn them with no real thought to design.

Even when I draw or paint, I don’t sit down and consciously decide to make a particular thing. I just scribble, wash colors over the paper, and play around until something emerges. Something I like. Something that makes me smile and say, “Yes, that’s it.”

That’s how I felt in creating this artwork, titled “Webs”.  I hope you enjoy it.
